Amotherby started the season with basically the same squad as they finished with, John Towse being the only notable signing from Old Malton. Hood managed to hang onto key players Moorcroft, Dunning and Biggins who had all being approached by Old Malton in he summer break, the team showed great attitude in pre-season and were looking forward to a much better season then the first under Matty Hood, With Hood planning to quit in January he brought John MacLeod to be joint coach with him for the season. The boys took to John Mac and soon became “one of the lads”
Everything was going great with impressive cup wins over Premiership York St Johns and at the time Premiership league leaders Nestle Rountrees who were on the end of a 4-0 hammering, Our first defeat of the season came late in October when league leaders Hamilton Panthers were the visitors, A&S were cruising 1-0 until the most pinnacle moment in season occurred, skipper Wayne Calvert breaking his leg in two places, the half an hour break hit the home side for six and Panthers took full advantage scoring 3 goals in ten minutes so sink A&S to their first defeat of the season.
Amotherby though still showed bite and quality, taking champions Dringhouses all the play to penalties before losing 3-2, Biggins, Dunning and Foxton missing the vital kicks,
However after a 4-2 victory at Norwich Union in the Senior Cup gave Amotherby their dream tie, a quarter final match away at Old Malton, the game had a huge build up and was set to be great derby game. Certain Old Malton players laughed and joked at Hood & Mac’s pre-match team meeting, but they soon turned into the jokers themselves with a lack luster performance and were fortunate to take Amotherby to penalties with the scores being level at 2-2 after 120 minutes, The Amotherby support was huge and the fans played their part booing and jeering ex A&S star Sam Thackray as he stepped up to take his penalty, the pressure showed as Thackray hitting his penalty wide, Matty Biggins then had a chance for victory but missed leaving the scores 3-2 with one taker left each, McGinty showed his cool by leveling the scores leaving man of the match Richard Webster the chance to steal the show, he stepped up and slotted home to give little Amotherby the greatest of cup victories. This turned out to be Hood’s last game as Manager and midfielder Gary Punchard’s as they both left for South America, Another blow was soon to follow as Matty Biggins was snapped up by Pickering Town.
Jimmy Baxter was called up to the first team and shone immediately, however the clubs promotion hopes slowly faded and leaving the club with just a semi final to play for, The game in March was away at title Favorites Huntington Rovers, A&S nearly took them all the way until 113 minutes when a Dyson header won it for the home side breaking Amotherby’s final hopes. Amotherby finished the season in 6th somewhat respectable finish after many people thought a relegation battle would be on the cards after Biggins departure. Five cup ties against Premiership opposition saw no defeats after 90 minutes taking Dringhouses to pens and going so close at Huntington, The cup exploits seemed to take effect on the A&S league form, However next season league glory is the number one objective and the team should be among the favorites for once. The young squad gained another valuable seasons experience and with just one player set to leave and one already in for the new season. The future looks bright with Hood and Mac still at the helm and with other players showing interest in the club due the clubs progress on and off the pitch over the past season.
